APEC Workshop for the Deployment of MEA Technology Held in Beijing, the World’s First Chinese Domain Name Email Registration Platform Released

  On October 30th, APEC Workshop for the Deployment of MEA(multilingual email address) Technology is held in Beijing,the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the world’s first Chinese domain name email registration platform. WANG Xiujun, Deputy Minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, ZHANG Feng, Chief Engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, CAO Ning, Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Facility Support and Budget of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Professor John KLENSIN and Researcher QIAN Hualin, inductees of the international Internet Hall of Fame, as well as other well-known experts and scholars attended the meeting.
  Over the years, CNNIC is committed to solve the worldwide difficult problem of MEA. Since 2004, CNNIC has led the development of international standards for MEA, propelled the research and development for the prototype system, promoted the popularization of MEA. In June 2012, CNNIC sent the first multilingual email in the world. Since 2012, well-known mail service providers, such as Coremail and Postfix, have announced to support the MEA technology. In July 2013, the MEA technology project was awarded the support from the APEC telecommunications working group.
  In her speech, WANG Xiujun, Deputy Minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, expressed her congratulations to the release of the world’s first Chinese domain name email registration platform, and affirmed the fruitful work of domestic and foreign Internet workers, such as CNNIC. She pointed out, MEA technology has greatly facilitated the non English speaking Internet users, effectively narrowed the digital divide, and promoted the diversification of the Internet, making the Internet better serve the human society. She stressed that in order to create a safe, open and cooperative cyberspace, we need to actively promote the innovation and development, effectively maintain the network security, comprehensively promote the cyberspace legalization, and actively carry out international cooperation.
  Chief Engineer ZHANG Feng fully affirmed the development and deployment of MEA technology. He proposed to vigorously support the popularization of Chinese domain names and Chinese email address, enhance the ability of technological innovation, promote industrial cooperation, attach importance to network information security, and safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of users, creating a good environment for MEA application and development. Deputy Director General CAO Ning said, the Chinese Academy of Sciences will continue to work around the target of building a cyberpower, and play the backbone role of national strategic technology forces in the field of information technology.
  Researcher LI Xiaodong, former Co-chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) International Email Address (IEA) Standard Working Force and Head of CNNIC, introduced the work of CNNIC in the field of IEA and counted the hardships in the past ten years. He also called on the majority of the Internet enterprises and institutions as well as email service providers to fully support the MEA technology including Chinese domain name email, in order to make this technology more quickly benefit the Internet users.
  Professor John KLENSIN and Research QIAN Hualin, inductees of the Internet Hall of Fame, shared the R&D and deployment process of IEA, and appealed to all sectors of the society to jointly promote the popularization and application of this technology.
  During the meeting, the delegates signed the appeal document of IEA technology deployment.
