Delegation Led by the President of ICANN Visited CNNIC
On June 14, 2011, Rod Beckstrom, President of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and other leaders of ICANN, visited CNNIC.
With the Deputy Director Xiaodong LI as the guide, the delegation of ICANN visited the IDC of CNNIC. Then, Director Huang Xiangyang, introduced to Rod and the delegation the development of .CN domain names, especially the development of Chinese domain names with “.中国” during one year after the official operation. Since “.中国” domain names were delegated by ICANN last June and went into official operation in August. Since then, “.中国” domain names have been widely recognized in the Chinese domain name market, with registrations increasing rapidly to340,000 by now. Mr. Rod expressed his appreciation to CNNIC for the development of Chinese domain names. Mr. Rod introduced to CNNIC the progress of New gTLD, a program undertaken by ICANN at present. Mr. Rod praised CNNIC’s contribution to the development of variant Chinese characters in New gTLD, and indicated that ICANN is willing to intensify cooperation with CNNIC to formulate management policy concerning variant Chinese characters of New gTLD program as soon as possible, so as to assist CNNIC in conducting the application of New gTLDs of “.公司” and “.网络”. Meanwhile, ICANN hoped to carry out further cooperation with CNNIC, especially in the aspects of technical management & coordination of DNS and DNS security etc.
