From June 26 to 28, the IGF 2024 Second Open
Consultations and MAG Meeting was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr. Zhang Xiao, Deputy Director-General of China Internet Network Information
Center (CNNIC) and member of the IGF MAG attended the meeting.
At the Second Open Consultations, ECOSOC, UNESCO, UNDP, OSET, OECD, ITU and UNECA, among others, updated the current international digital governance process. Participants had deep exchange on the IGF contribution to the Global Digital Compact (GDC) and WSIS+20, the future of international digital governance, artificial intelligence and other issues, and pointed out that multistakeholder participation should be strengthened to foster partnership with relevant international digital governance mechanisms.
The meeting also discussed intersessional
activities, reviewed and approved the 2024 IGF Workshop proposal, and planned the
IGF 2024 main sessions. The 19th IGF
on "Building our Multistakeholder Digital Future"
will be held in Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from December 15
to 19, 2024.
As a global high-level open forum on Internet
governance, the UN IGF was set up by the UN in November 2005, based on the
resolution of WSIS. The MAG,
set up by the UN Secretary-General, is a key expert group of the IGF, and is
comprised of about 50 members from governments, the private sector and civil
society, including representatives from the academic and technical communities. Its main purpose is to advise
the Secretary-General on the program and schedule of the IGF meetings, and on Internet
governance and other key digital issues. At the 18th UN IGF, held in Japan from
October 8 to 12, 2023,
Dr. Zhang Xiao was elected as a member of the IGF MAG, and Mr. Li
Junhua, UN Under-Secretary-General, presented the letter of appointment on site.
