CNNIC Attends the 9th Meeting of IGF
From September 2 to 5, 2014, the 9th meeting of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) was held in Istanbul, Turkey. More than 3,300 persons from governments, private sectors, NGOs and intergovernmental organizations as well as remote participants attended the meeting. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China Academy of Telecommunication Research of MIIT, China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) and the Internet Society of China sent delegations to attend the meeting. CNNIC’s delegation to the IGF meeting was headed by Li Xiaodong, with Sun Xiantang, Zhu Hongbin and Han Liyun as members.
The overarching theme of the meeting is "Connecting Continents for Enhanced Multistakeholder Internet Governance", under which there are 8 subthemes covering Internet development, access right and diversity, network security, multi-stakeholder cooperation, function and influence of NetMundial meeting, Internet governance, IANA functions stewardship transition and net neutrality. The meeting consists of pre-event, opening & closing ceremonies, focus/main session, open forum and workshop, etc.
During the meeting, CNNIC successfully applied for and organized the IGF workshop themed with “Improving Internet Architecture to Drive Consumer Trust". Guests including ICANN Asia-Pacific Region Vice Chairman Yu-Chuang Kuek, Mr. Tomas Lamanauskas from ITU, Russia RU-CENTER CEO Andrei Kolesnikov and Mr. Raul Echeberria from ISOC Global Center were invited to the workshop to discuss on how to enhance the trust of global users in Internet through strengthening Internet infrastructure construction and improving Internet governance framework. It is the second straight year for CNNIC to apply successfully for hosting a theme side workshop during the IGF meeting.
Besides organizing the side workshops, CNNIC’s delegation actively participated in the popular sessions and other workshops during the meeting. Li Xiaodong attended the main sessions themed with promoting Internet development and global access, Internet governance and IANA transition, etc. and made speeches. He met with ICANN’s President Fadi Chehadé, IGF Multi-stakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) Chairman Janis as well as executives of ITU and ISOC, etc. Sun Xiantang participated in the discussions about policies on domain name management, and was invited as a guest to “ccTLDs: partners in developing local ‘IGliteracy’” to make a speech on the impact of domain name policies of all countries on future Internet development and domain name market against the backdrop of open application for new gTLDs. Zhu Hongbin participated in “Language on the move: Developing multilingualism in the net”, a workshop jointly organized by EURID and UNESCO, and made a speech. Han Liyun was responsible for the arrangement of CNNIC’s exhibition booth as well as planning and management of the workshop.
During the meeting, CNNIC’s delegation organized and participated in the most main sessions and workshops amongst all IGF meetings it has organized or participated in, playing an active role in expanding the influence of CNNIC and further deepening CNNIC's involvement in the next IGF meeting.
